CASE STUDY: Saturnia (Marble) on Hotel Pool Deck

PROBLEM: Very Slippery Surface + Fading

SOLUTION: Application of coating + anti-slip media

Can you believe the architect on this project actually proposed a Saturnia Marble on a pool deck? At first, this was a condo where the tenants may have had to deal with a slippery pool deck. Due to the economy at the time, this was converted to a condo-hotel, which created new challenges for the many flooring surfaces.

In addition to the obvious slippery conditions, the engineers faced exterior stone fading in Florida’s conditions.

In this case, perhaps a penetrating sealer could have been used to protect the stone from discoloration caused by pool chemicals, body oils, etc. However, since the sealer penetrated, the surface remained slippery and exposed to the elements. The dilemma was: any other sealer, whether topical or penetrating, would create a greater slip hazard.

The solution was coating the surface, not sealing. Another issue with using a sealer was that any sealer would only be a temporary solution, lasting 1-1.5 years. By applying this, it would be a permanent sealer to protect against fading and chemicals. With the addition of our anti-slip aggregate process, the slip issue was also solved.
