CASE STUDY: Restoration of Faded Pavers at Strip Mall

PROBLEM: Half of the pavers faded due to partial shading

SOLUTION: Coloring using Nano Technology

This scenario involved a strip mall that neglected to maintain its pavers (sealing), and there was a distinct, noticeable ‘line’ down the length of the walkway. The outside edge, which had been more exposed to the sun, was faded, while the inside edge still had some color.

This was a good lesson in sealing or protecting the pavers. The sun will fade the pigment used for at least 4 years. Sealing pavers, or coating them as offered by National Sealing Co., for more durability and longevity, is necessary to protect against fading and staining.

In this case, it was too late to seal the pavers and revive them. The options would be to try to paint (in house staff), and perhaps even stain the pavers. Painting the surface would not only create a smoother surface and reduce slip hazards, but would also be challenging to maintain, as the paint would begin to wear in high-traffic areas (the shop entrance). Another option would be to STAIN the surface. Although the stain would penetrate to some extent, the customer thought the result would give a ‘painted’ look and resemble more of a uniform, stamped concrete look, which isn’t much better than just keeping the faded pavers in place.

A unique option offered by National Sealing Co. is to utilize the latest in sealing technology, including nano-technology. We have developed a formula for coloring a clear nano sealer. Although the surface would be one color, the nano coloring concept is translucent, therefore allowing a hint of the previous variations in color to still show through. This results in a revitalized look with minimal risk to the original color combination.
