Sealing Flamed Granite
Case study: Flamed Granite Fountain
Problem: Keeping Granite Clean
This scenario was a large hotel with a flamed-granite fountain/waterfall. This structure was 90 ft. high, and the concern was cleaning and controlling mildew, calcium buildup, and residue. The white calcium buildup would stand out considerably against a darker gray flamed granite background.
If this surface were sealed with a penetrating sealer, it would keep the appearance relatively similar to the original surface; however, it would do very little to protect it. Another approach would have been to use a conventional surface sealer; however, while darkening the surface and making it appear uniform compared to the running water of the fountain, this would have been a temporary solution and difficult to reapply annually on a 90-foot structure.
The solution was to apply our coating process. This would 1) Darken the surface to give the desired uniform look when compared to the rest of the fountain’s running water. 2) Virtually eliminate the risk of mildew, as this is an inorganic product that does not support the growth of mildew. 3) Topical protection. Any type of buildup, including calcium, would mostly be washed away merely by rain. 4) This coating process is a very durable and long-lasting coating and will last at least 5 years before any re-application would need to be considered.
